“So what are you going to have at the farmers market, anyway?”

The answer we’ve been giving to that question since we first started kicking around the idea last fall? We don’t know.

Really. We don’t.

That’s all up to our local farmers — every week, they’re going to bring what they’ve been picking in their fields.

It could be carrots. It could be corn (but not this week — the corn crop’s running about two weeks behind due to all that rain). It could be something you’ve never even tried yet, like the white salad turnips that Silvermine Farm talked us into trying.

But in the meantime, want to take a gander at some of the things we saw, and bought, and ate this week?

So if you look up at the top of this post, you’re going to see baby bok choy from Nourse Farm. Bok choy is fantastic. Cut it up to use in stir fries — no doubt you’ve had it in a Chinese restaurant and wondered what the fantastic crunchy vegetable way — and you can also use it in salads and cole slaws.

The veggies in the second photo is kind of obvious — those are some carrots from Silvermine Farm, and we’re not embarrassed to say we were washing them off with water right there and snacking on them at the market.

Also from Silvermine, those white objects are salad turnips. Cut them up to add to salad or saute them in a little olive oil and garlic — they’re slightly sweet and crunchy.

Here’s something a little obvious, too.

Yes, that’s lettuce.

Ruth at Holden Farms was telling us the lettuce is practically exploding in size this season — they love colder weather and wet, and it appears Mother Nature is certainly in the mood for lettuce with the weather we’re having.

And with heads that look like that, who can blame her?

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention some of the non-edible items at the farmers market. Check out these flowers from Sweetbriar Florist.

Everyone was walking around with a flower or two — doesn’t that just scream farmers market? — and some of them were truly otherworldly. You’re definitely going to find something that is a bit more than a red carnation at this stall, we suspect.

Unusual is also the name of the game at Mapel Plants.

They were selling not only ornamental garden plants — we loved that they pointed out their rice loved the rain — but also pepper varieties (there was a really cool black hot pepper plant) and a “three bean salad” combo. If you’re looking for something to jazz up your garden or give as a gift to the gardener who has everything, definitely check them out.

And finally, we would love to show you some of the baked goods from Paul’s Bakery. Really, we would. But they we our first sell-out. Don’t worry, they promise they’ll be bringing even more to the market next week!

We talked Michael Urban into going on “2 Guys Who Like to Talk” to promote the Grafton Farmers Market — can you believe it’s only TWO WEEKS away — and, as luck would have it, they decided to take him on last night during their annual live broadcast from Grafton Common.

By the way, we’re now referring to the Common, always, as “Grafton Common, the home of the Grafton Farmers Market every Thursday starting July 9.” Do you think the new title will catch on?

A story about the show appeared in today’s GraftonTimes.com and the show will be rebroadcast at 10 p.m. Friday for those who missed it. By the way: if you’re on Verizon cable, you can now watch local access again — just check out channel 34 for local access! (Government is 33, Education is 32 if you were wondering)

At this point, you’re probably wondering: what did that look like? Oh yes, we have pictures.

But what, you may be asking, is Michael carrying with him?

Why, the brand spankin’ new Grafton Farmers Market bags! They will be available at the market for $2 each and are sure to become a status symbol among those who like to BYOB (Bring Your Own Bags).

Thanks for having us on the show, guys!

There may still be snow on the ground, but the Farmers Market Steering Committee is still busily planning for the harvest season, which will bring the first annual Grafton Farmers Market to the Town Common every Thursday starting July 9.

The Grafton Farmers Market, run under the sponsorship of the town Recreation Department, has three signed commitments from North Grafton’s Houlden Farms, Silvermine Farm of Sutton and Nourse Farm of Westborough and is in talks with multiple other local farms to bring fresh fruit and produce to the weekly event. The Boroughs Branch YMCA has also signed on as an official sponsor.

“We’re hoping to not only bring in seasonal produce but also to highlight the businesses in the Grafton Common area,” said Michael Urban, who chairs the committee. “We want to make this something special for the residents of Grafton.”

An informational meeting for the Grafton community is planned for Monday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Evangelical Congregational Church, 30 Grafton Common. The committee is seeking feedback from the community as well as suggestions for vendors and activities during the market, which is expected to run July 9-Oct. 22, 2-6:30 p.m. (or dusk in the fall months).

A Web site, http://graftonfarmer.wordpress.com, has full information about plans for the market and will highlight upcoming events. For further information, please contact Michael Urban at urban_michael2002@yahoo.com.

The Grafton Farmers Market is pleased to announce that we have two farms officially signed on as vendors for our first season.

Houlden Farms is already a Grafton institution and sells fruits, veggies and local eggs from its own farmstand at 139 Old Westboro Road in North Grafton. We knew we could not offer a market without including Houlden and we’re pleased that they agree!

Nourse Farm is so close to the Grafton line in Westborough at its 70 Nourse St. location that some feel we should simply annex it for ourselves. The farm is well known for its berries, as well as the jams and preserves it creates with them, and will be selling fruits and vegetables throughout the season at the Grafton Farmers Market.

If there’s a farm you want represented at the market this season, don’t hesitate to link them to our site!
